The FIRA-A.E.R. (European Rugby Union) has introduced the first European 7s Rugby cycle in 2002 with a final tournament for the European title. From numerous qualification tournaments in different countries the best 12 teams qualified for the final tournament in Heidelberg (Germany). The German team could finish this inaugural European championship with a brilliant third place. Portugal became European champion.
In the following year 2003 Heidelberg (Germany) was again venue of the final tournament. Again, perfectly organised by the organising committee around C. P. Bach, numerous spectators came to the Fritz-Grunebaum-Sportpark to push the German team to an excellent fourth place. A wonderful achievement for the German Rugby created by the coach-/management-team Fritz Raupers / Rainer Kumm / Hans-Joachim Wallenwein / Mathias Rother.
In 2004, Palma de Mallorca (Spain, Balearic Islands) was host the European championship and the Sevens World Cup qualifier. Germany had some tough games at pool stage with Ireland and France and almost succeeded in pulling off sensational wins in both of them. This was the first test for new coach Frank Nagel (Hamburg). Unfortunately, the German team finished only 15th after an impressive preliminary round.
In the years 2005, 2006 and 2007, Moscow (Russia) hosted the final tournament of the European championship. Germany finished with a good 6th place in 2005 and a disappointing 9th place in 2007 (the team was one of the favourites).
On the 12th and 13th July 2008, we will see you in Germany, in Hanover. In the AWD arena, the Europea champion will be determined within two days and five qualifiers for the World Cup Sevens 2009 in Dubai.
